In a devastating week for U.S. aviation, two separate aircraft accidents in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia have resulted in significant loss of life and raised concerns about air safety protocols.
Mid-Air Collision Over the Potomac River
On the evening of January 29, 2025, an American Airlines Bombardier CRJ-700, operating as Flight 5342, collided mid-air with a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. All 64 passengers and crew aboard the CRJ-700, as well as the three military personnel in the helicopter, perished in the accident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the helicopter was flying at an altitude of 325 feet, exceeding the prescribed maximum of 200 feet for its route. The air traffic controller had issued a warning to the helicopter crew two minutes before the collision. Data suggests the CRJ-700 crew reacted just one second before impact.
Medical Jet Crash in Philadelphia
Just two days later, on January 31, a Learjet 55 medical transport plane crashed in a Philadelphia neighborhood shortly after takeoff. All six individuals on board, including a child patient, a family member, and medical staff, lost their lives. The crash also resulted in one fatality and 22 injuries on the ground, with three individuals remaining in critical condition.
